XDR (Extended Detection and Response)

Extended detection and response (XDR) is an approach that brings together several detection tools, such as endpoint detection and response, network monitoring, email security and identity protection, into one unified system. It extends the EDR model beyond the endpoint.

How it works

  • Unified telemetry: data from endpoints, networks, email, cloud workloads and identity systems is collected in one place.
  • Correlation: related events across layers are linked into a single incident, for example a phishing email, a login from a new device and a suspicious process on the same user’s laptop.
  • Coordinated response: actions such as isolating a host, blocking a sender and disabling an account can be taken from one console, manually or automatically.

The term is used loosely in the market. A dashboard that only displays logs from several tools is not XDR unless it also correlates them and supports response. Managed detection and response (MDR) is a related term for a service in which an external team operates such tools on the customer’s behalf.

Why it matters for defenders

Modern attacks rarely stay in one layer. Stolen credentials lead to a cloud login, which leads to mailbox access and then to malware on an endpoint. XDR helps defenders see that chain as one incident. External signals, such as account takeover attempts using leaked credentials, add context that internal telemetry alone may miss.
