SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response)

Security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) describes platforms that connect an organization’s security tools and run predefined workflows, called playbooks, to handle alerts and incidents. The goal is to respond faster and more consistently, and to free analysts from repetitive tasks.

How it works

  • Orchestration: the platform connects to tools such as the SIEM, EDR, email gateway, firewall, ticketing and identity systems through their APIs.
  • Automation: playbooks perform steps automatically, for example looking up an IP address, collecting related logs or quarantining an email.
  • Response and case management: actions such as disabling an account or isolating a host can run automatically or wait for analyst approval, and every step is recorded.

SOAR depends on good detections and clear procedures. Automating a poor process only makes the mistakes faster, so most teams start with simple, low-risk playbooks.

Why it matters for dark web monitoring

Dark web alerts often lead to the same steps every time: confirm that a leaked account exists, check whether the password is current, force a reset, revoke sessions and notify the user. A SOAR playbook can run that sequence within minutes of an alert about combolists or stealer logs, which shortens the window in which stolen credentials can be used.
